However, the quality of the print is not the only thing that matters. There are other factors that have a huge impact on the overall outlook of the product. One of these factors is the type of finishing and binding methods used for the paper.

Finishing

Finishing is a reference to all the processes performed on the printed material after it has been printed on so that it may look worthy of being presented to an audience. There are different processes that come under the category of finishing. These can be:

  • Cutting and trimming
  • Folding
  • Collating and gathering
  • Laminating
  • Embossing and debossing
  • Die cutting
  • Gluing
  • Indexing

Binding

Binding is also a type of finishing process. In this process, sheets are bound together using different techniques. While there are numerous binding techniques used by printing companies, here are some of the most commonly used ones:

Perfect binding
A process used for paperback books, magazines and telephone guides where the pages are fixed to the spine with the help of glue.

Thread sewing
This process is mainly preferred for hardcover books where the book block is first stitched together using a thread and then later attached to the spine through a process called case binding.

Spiral binding
Often used for notebooks, a continuous cord or wire is wound through a stack of paper with holes punched in it.

Padding
This type of binding is commonly found in notepads. The sheets are bound together with the help of a flexible adhesive so that it becomes easier to remove the sheets from the stack anytime one wishes.
